            Puerto Rico has been an unincorporated territory of the United States since 1917. With that being said, the Caribbean island has been under American influence since the ending of the Spanish-American War, in which it was given to the United States through Treaty of Paris. Since then, the United States has had an impactful influence over Puerto Rico politically, economically, and socially.
